The School of International Letters and Cultures is pleased to offer an award of $1,500 for an outstanding translation, in memory and honor of Professor Judith Radke. 

Rules to be considered:

1. Candidate must be a full-time graduate student pursuing a master's or doctoral degree from the School of International Letters and Cultures.
2. Candidates must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
3. Candidates must submit their own original written translation of a work from another language into English.
4. The source material must be a scholarly or literary work or an extract thereof.
5. The translation must be a minimum of 1,000 words and a maximum of 1,500 words. 
6. The translation must have been done while the candidate is registered at ASU in the SILC graduate program. Translations done for a thesis or class are acceptable.
7. The translation must be of publishable quality, into fluid and idiomatic English. We strongly recommend those non-native speakers of English work with a faculty member who is a native English speaker.
8. The students should take care to choose a source text that they can translate and not to select a text that is too difficult or beyond their skill.
9. Previous award winners may apply.
10. Only one submission per student will be accepted.

Required materials:

1. The student's translation.
2. The source text, including citation information.
3. All previous translations of the source text, including all citation information.*
4. A cover letter explaining why a new translation is needed and why the submitted translation is an improvement over previous work.
5. A letter (maximum of two pages) from a faculty member who has excellent knowledge of the source language and text, attesting to: a) the quality of the translation b) the importance of the source text and c) the difficulty of the source text.

Item 5 (the letter from a faculty member) advocates for the translation. The information contained in the letter is a crucial aid to the committee in making their decision. As such, the importance and difficulty of the source text must be taken into account and the letter should discuss in detail the quality of the student's translation and what distinguishes it from other translations (if applicable).

The committee may choose to award lesser amounts for honorable mentions. The committee reserves the right not to make any awards. 

*Because this requirement can cause hardship in some cases, translations dating from no more than 50 years ago should be submitted as PDF files. If there are translations that date from more than 50 years ago, there should be listed in a bibliography.
